customs brokerage
The freight companies we work with typically have relationships with customs brokerage services to make filing an entry with Canada Border Services easier. Once you place an order with us a customs broker will contact you on behalf of our freight broker.
You may choose to use your own customs broker if you prefer.
The customs broker will provide a form for you to complete, which requires the full legal name you have registered the company under including the GST # or your full name and SIN# (if not registered as a business) and payment for the required duties, taxes and disbursements at the port of entry into Canada.
Applicable charges may include: a brokerage fee, duties (if applicable), taxes, and a disbursement fee. Duty is usually exempt with USMCA certificates, which we provide to the freight company, but you may also need to provide the certificate to the Customs Broker. Please contact us if you need a copy of this document.
Upon Entry
Upon entry into Canada there are additional commodity taxes dependent on the shipment type;
a) Commercial shipments are taxed at 5% of the value of the goods converted to Canadian dollars.
b) Non-Commercial or Casual shipments are taxed based on the destination province. (example: shipments destined for Alberta at 5%, Ontario at 13%, etc).
Additional costs may occur due to tariff code changes, USMCA certificate presentation, tax changes based on port of entry, border charges due to inspection, foreign exchange rate movements, storage, etc.
